In July of 2012, the area of Aya Town in Miyazaki Prefecture where one of Japan's largest scale evergreen broadleaf forests remains, was certified as the fifth UNESCO Eco Park in Japan, 32 years after its predecessor. As part of its efforts to upgrade their educational environment, the town of Aya is considering reconstructing its deteriorated Middle School building using wood as befitting an Eco Park town. All the lumber needed to construct the schoolhouse would be felled from an area of the town-owned planted forest that is due for harvesting. Our 3-year plan calls for re-planting of trees in the harvested area to restore it to its original state as a mountain forest.
