On April 5, 2002, up to 410 ha of mountain forest were devastated in a forest fire in the cities of Gifu and Kakamigahara in Gifu Prefecture. Reforestation efforts are being made in order to begin the process of reforestation as quickly as possible and bring back the natural ecosystem of the area.
