Suzhou City is home to Lake Taihu, China's third largest freshwater lake, of which three-fifths of the water area is in the city's Wuzhong district. Dongshanzhen is located on the lake's southern coast. The natural environment has suffered due to development including bank reinforcement projects, however efforts are currently underway based on Suzhou City's scheme for ecosystem restoration and environmental regeneration. The AEON Environmental Foundation concurs with the city's plans, and is helping to restore the environment by planting trees on the lakefront landfills. By planting and nurturing mandarin orange trees that are a unique indigenous species to Dongshanzhen, we are serving to improve the area's environment as well as protect the traditional cityscape and culture to be passed on to future generations.
