Dr. Kaifu was born in Tokyo in 1973. He graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Hitotsubashi University in 1998. Then he earned a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology in 2005 and a PhD degree from the Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the University of Tokyo in 2011. Now he also serves as a member of the Anguillid Specialist Sub-Group (ASSG) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

 

Dr. Kaifu’s major research field is conservation ecology. He served as Project Professor at the Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the University of Tokyo from 2011 to 2014. Since 2014, he has professed logical science, environmental science and biology as Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Law, Chuo University. In 2013, he participated in an assessment of freshwater eels (genus Anguiila) for the IUCN. In the 2014 and 2015 fiscal years, he served as representative researcher for research on Japanese eel conservation strategies contracted by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment. He is currently conducting research toward the conservation and sustainable use of Japanese eels. In addition, he has been engaged in information sharing and consensus building among a wide range of eel stakeholders. He called for the foundation of the “Japan Eel Forum” which enables discussions among the stakeholders, and served as the Chairperson for the 1st Congress held in May 2015. His major publications include: “Watashi no Unagi Kenkyu (in Japanese, My Research into Eels) (Saela Shobo),” and “Unadon no Mirai – Unagi no Jizokuteki Riyo wa Kano ka (in Japanese, The Future of Unadon: Is the Sustainable Use of Eels Possible?) (Seidosha, co-author).”
