Conservation biologist and wildlife ecologist, Dr. Jan Schipper has spent the past 20 years conducting research and exploring the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. As Director of ProCAT International, and also of the newly formed Sierra to Sea Institute – he has made it his mission to bring the best available science to bear on decision making – both for science and policy. Dr. Schipper has led expeditions in Suriname, Brazil, Costa Rica and elsewhere to evaluate and better understand the connectivity between land, rivers and the ocean – and the need to both preserve the linkages but also to recognize the flows of ecological impacts from land to sea and back again. He has been awarded the Wiliam T. Hornaday and the Jaguar Cars/Ford Motor Companies conservation awards, has published his research in top journals such as Science, Nature and BioScience, and is an active member of three IUCN Species Survival Commission Species Species Specialist Groups (Cats, Small Carnivores and Lagomorphs). Today Dr. Schipper bridges academia and conservation and is working to expose more students to conservation issues so that we can train a new generation of citizens who can think more clearly about how the decisions they make on a daily basis impact the environment, species and ultimately our own survival.
