A 3-year Tree Planting Project has started in Vietnam - Toward the Restoration of National Park Forests

In Ba Vi National Park, located in a suburb of Hanoi, devastated forests have been abandoned due to bomb damage during the Vietnam War, timber use for houses and furniture during the postwar period, and deforestation by residents for forging their livelihood.

AEON Environmental Foundation launched a 3-year tree planting project on 22 March, 2014, in cooperation with the Center for Natural Resources Management and Environmental Studies (CRES), Vietnam National University, Hanoi.  This project aims at recovering rich nature in the national park through supporting environmental education for the students and residents in the region.

AEON’s tree planting projects have their roots in the “Tree Planting at the Great Wall of China” suggested at “the 2nd Japan-China International Symposium on Environmental Issues” held in Beijing in 1995.  Being inspired by this suggestion, we invited Dr. Akira Miyawaki, a notable ecologist, as the leader of the investigation team, and conducted surveys and discussions on the tree species selection, seed production, raising seedlings, and so on.  The aims of these surveys and discussion are to recover the original vegetation of the areas by mix and dense planting of native species.  Surveys are conducted and discussions held when we carry out tree planting projects both in Japan and abroad.

In Vietnam, we planted about 70,000 trees from 2010 to 2013 in the “Vietnam Huế Tree Planting Project.”  The 3 year Tree Planting Project in Ba Vi National Park will be more developed, based on our past project in Vietnam.

Dr. Vo Quy, a prize winner of the MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity 2012 and the Honorary President of the CRES, also participated in this project.  Along with 560 volunteers from Japan and Vietnam, we planted a total of 2500 trees of 12 tree species including yellow-flesh, Chinese parasol and red oak.  Also, we donated photovoltaic facilities to junior high schools in Vietnam to encourage environmental education using natural energy with low environmental loads.

AEON Environmental Foundation conducts tree planting projects domestically and internationally.

We hope our projects can provide people with opportunities to think about the preciousness of biodiversity.
