The year 2015 reaches a significant milestone of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020. The Japan Awards for Biodiversity 2015 will be organized in this important year which marks “the turn” of the UNDB.

AEON Environmental Foundation established “The Japan Awards for Biodiversity” (domestic prize) and “The MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity” (international prize) in 2009 and 2010, respectively, in commemoration of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) in Nagoya, Japan. These prizes are both biennial and are awarded alternately.

The aim of “the Japan Awards” is to honor “projects” carried out by organizations or individuals in Japan, and that of “the MIDORI Prize” is to honor “individuals” who have made outstanding contributions at global, regional or local levels.

These two prizes both aim to encourage positive action for biodiversity and inspire others by showcasing the notable work of those it honors.

In accordance with the opening of applications for the Japan Awards in March 2015, messages from the 2014 Prize Winners of the MIDORI Prize, another environmental prize which is also organized by the AEON Environmental Foundation, were delivered.

“The AEON Environmental Foundation is perhaps one of the few foundations in the world that rewards efforts to conserve our natural heritage by making such awards as the Japan and MIDORI Prizes in Biodiversity. Thus the work of the Foundation has received global attention. The year 2015 will mark another milestone when the Foundation selects winning projects for the Japan Award in Biodiversity, and recognizes yet another set of projects that would show us the importance of biodiversity in sustaining nature and our own lives.”

“I have come to know about the motivation of AEON Environmental Foundation on issues of biodiversity and the desire to affect the global community in taking care of biodiversity which is mankind’s treasurable insurance and source of life. The AEON Environmental Foundation demonstrates this through the two awards on biodiversity which have been awarded alternately each year since 2009. The Japan Awards are domestic for the Japanese community and I will encourage many applicants to send their applications. The contributions that you as a potential applicant have made on an aspect of biodiversity and/or an ecosystem to secure the liveliness for species and the ecosystems they constitute, must be known and properly recognized through this award.”

“There are many people in the world that have a real and vital commitment to the protection of biodiversity. Some do it from their professional lives and others do it highlighting the achievements that occur. The AEON Environmental Foundation is a mother institution when it comes to recognizing the values of the protection of biodiversity. It's the kind of institution that helps the world to be nicer. All those who have a dream to make a more sustainable world and have a project in Japan must apply to the “The Japan Awards for Biodiversity”. I can state that AEON Environmental Foundation helps dreams come true.”
