The area surrounding Lake Shikotsu which extends over two cities, Chitose and Tomakomai in Hokkaido, suffered severe damage from Typhoon 18 in 2004, including many uprooted conifer trees. In order to reforest the area with a mixture of broadleaf and conifer trees, 39,600 broadleaf trees were planted by a total of 5,200 volunteers.
